trouble starting my 98' road king classic
First of all thanx for being here. I just bought a 1998 Roadking classic.(my first harley) It is running great and have been rideing it daily until it just would'nt start. It would turn over and over and fire occaisionally, and when it did start, i gave it gas and it stalled.Someone said the battery dose'nt have enough charge to engage the injecters,so i charged the battery and the same thing......I tried to start it later that day and it started right up without any problems.Dose anyone have any suggestions? Thank you for your time.

So you have established that you do have EFI as opposed to a carb. There are three things that are required for an engine to start; fuel, fire (at the right time) and compression. Check for spark at the plugs and ensure they aren't fouled. Do a compression test, preferrably on a hot engine if you can get it running. Do it with both plugs out and a fully charged battery. Check the injectors for an open or shorted solenoid. Then run a fuel pressure test. After that you will need to check to see if the injectors are getting a signal. There are test tools for that if you can't figure out how to do it with a meter. If none of these tests turn up a problem, you may have an ECM unit issue. Good luck.

hold on.
You do NOT crank a motor with the plugs out of the heads UNLESS the plugs are grounded to the motor.
You can destroy the coil(s).
That's basic on any electronic ignition system, carb or EFI.
Is this an EFI system? if so, it should start with out any throttle. turn it on and listen for the fuel pump to run, then stop. then try starting
if carb, it may need a twist of the throttle before starting to get fuel into the intake - there is also an enricher **** that needs pulling out on the left side under the tank.
IS the battery and electrical system in good condition? it is possible to crank, yet not have enough power for the efi and ignition systems to work.
