I don't let it start, just hit the starter for a second a few times. Never had the need to pull the plugs or wires but my bike is not EFI if that makes a difference. If I thought it would start I would pull the wires. I do this in my vehicles as well. They are EFI and never cranked anything long enough to allow it to start.
