The Black Hills are one of those favorite places the wife and I never grow tired of visiting; Rally or no Rally.
Yep....the road between Hulett and Alzeda is State highway 112.....rode up it saturday as well.

It's a good loop.

The wife and i got back from Sturgis July 11 after a swing thru Colorado and Wyoming. Decided to get aheadof the crowds. Fantastic riding out that way and being as early as we were, no traffic. Stayed at the Penny Motel in Deadwood while we were there and rode out from it.

Agree with most of what has been posted. If you want to RIDE the hills Sturgis week is not the time to it,way to crazy. That being said the Rally is something most people will enjoy but it does get old in a hurry.

Loved Sturgis. I went during my R&R after my second OIF tour. Great time. I hit it up a few days before and stayed for a few days during. Custer State Park and Iron Mountain road were amazing.

Sturgis is on my bucket list. It’ll most likely be a once in a lifetime ride because of finances.

I’m retiring January 2012. My buddies and I are planning a ride to Sturgis and taking about 2 to 3 weeks of just riding. Won’t be going during the rally. I do Daytona two times a year. That’s enough rally for me.

Thanks for all of the comments! To answer some of the questions, I left from about 35 miles northwest of Philadelphia, PA. I took mostly interstates (80/90) on the way our through Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, and then into South Dakota. Coming home, I went south to route 20 in Nebraska and Iowa, then into Illinois. I took 80 from Illinois back home to PA.

The whole trip was a highlight, but some things that stick out are – In the Black Hills – Iron Mountain Road, The Custer State Park wildlife loop, and needles highway. Mount Rushmore was pretty neat as well. The ride to Devils Tower was great, as was Devil’s tower itself.

I stayed in Black Hawk at the Ramada Rapid City West. Nice place and it was centrally located. A downside was that it was not really “at” anyplace… an exit off of I90 with a gas station and a pizza hut.
