Default '09-'12 Mufflers on a 88"?

Okay, I hang on HDForums everyday and I don't think I have see this one, but if I have missed it (yes I searched) my apologies.

I am running a carbed, 88" stage one with a set of SE 98B mufflers on stock head pipes that I absolutly love. However, when the time comes for longer rides and I want my tunes I throw on my detachable fairing. When this is on, I would like some quieter pipes that I would put on temporarely for the trip. I don't want to choke out the motor and kill performance. I can put on my stockers but was wondering about the following options.

First of all I'm on a budget of $0 and my buddy is cleaning out his man cave and has a set of '09 muffs off a 96", and a set of muffs from a '12 103" he would give me. Would either of these be a good option for my "temporary" quiet pipes that I put on for my long distance touring? Will they flow any better than my stockers that come on my 88"?

the 09's would be from a "no cat*" bike, so maybe more restrictive than the S/E's you have.

the 12's are from a cat bike and probably flow more than the 09's ( as the cat in the 12's header pipes provides a fair amount of restriction)- and more than your stockers

Throw them on, it takes no time.

Get your pal to help you eyeball for even hanging ( L,R) when you put the new pipes on.

It may be a struggle, getting the old mufflers off. Be careful not to stress the head pipes, or you might have the Y pipe crack behind the rear head ( easy weld fix, but now you have to take it off...)
Cold pipes, use a torch to warm up the muffler side of the joint, and lightly twist it off. get your Pal to steady the header pipe while you do this.

--- if you want great performance and control of sound, check out Supertrapp supermegs, the unique disc system allows tuning for torque or horsepower. In town I adjust for torque, touring I adjust for horsepower. Supertrapp make the S/E Fatshotz which sometimes can be bought pretty cheap from other riders--- but I like your 0 budget approach, alot.

Mike

( * 2009 CA and some INTL. models did have cats in the header pipes, 49 State models did not. 2010 and up do)

Thanks for the advice, I am very experience at doing the change. But it never hurts for tips.

You have a good point about the '12's being from a cat bike.

Isn't the left muffler mostly a sound chamber?

So has anybody tried this?

I'm not that concerned with sound except I want it quiet (temporarely) when I tour. Its the performance I would like to know about.

My 65115-98B's deep Harley sound can't be beat if you want some nice volume.

I run mufflers that I picked up free from an '07 Street Glide (96") on my '03 FI Ultra (88"). Opened up the left muffler baffle with a 1/2" piece of re-bar. Runs and sounds great for no $$$

I can't imagine what you have discussed doing would hurt your performance. Guess I too should consider finding a set of mufflers from a '12 and giving that a try.
