Default 07 Ultra Oil pump failed - Engine gone!!!!

My buddy's dad has an 07 Ultra with about 8k miles. He was riding near his home last week and it started knocking like it wasn't getting oil. He went home and called the local dealer; they picked the bike up to check it out.

They called today and said the oil pump failed and has ruined the engine. I don't have any more details (got the info from his son), but they knew I lurked on here and asked me to check and see if others have had similar issues with late model touring bikes.

The dealer is talking to HD to see if there's something they can do about covering the failure, so this could still have a happy ending.

Anyone else had this? Did the dealer or HD want to cover it? I searched the forum but didn't find anything; thought I'd post the question. The bike is not under warranty, but has been dealer maintained.

Same thing happened to a buddy of mine. His was an 08 CVO Ultra. Entire engine had to be rebuilt. He had an extended warranty, but the idiots at Gulf Coast Harley had to do it twice, and they had his bike for 3 MOHTNS! It sounds good now, but he missed the best riding weather of the year....

I had something very similiar happen to my 08.....going down the road at highway speed, engine started making noise, blowing smoke out the back, oil pressure dropping off, stopped at a garage for gas and checked the oil........all gone except what I could see in the tank......topped it up so I could see it on the stick and headed into the nearest town at 30 miles an hour.......got there and no pressure so shut it down, harley dealer said it was my fault cause i had overfilled it with the wrong oil ! but they paid for some of the warranty work but not all.........so where did the oil go in the first place...and those F**kers never came up with an answer......paid to get my bike out of the shop as fast as I could........good luck to your buddy on that one

Anything can go wrong with any of the parts, but oil pumps don't seem to go as much it seems. The few who commented though have an '07 or '08? Wonder if there is a failure of these pumps starting to surface? Does anyone know if the pump changed in '07 during the 88" to 96" motor change?

I have an 07 classic (FLHTC) and last year it started to get a very bad vibration. I started to tear it down and the crank had scissored. That had scored the pump so bad that I had to replace that.

The only reason that I say about the scissored crank is that is a fairly common issue with the 07s. Maybe that is what happened to your friends. The crank scissored and that took out the pump.

Sure hope the MOCO steps up to the plate if the failure was an oil pump!

Very true with the crank. I did read a lot of post '07 models having crank and runout issues. I was lucky with the runout on my '05 that I had checked before the geared cam upgrade. That may be the case here with this '07.
