how much beter than the 96 is the new 103. im looking at trading my 08 heritage on a new roadking. the stock 96 runs hot, runs lean, and is lacking power. does the new 103 have the same issues stock, or did moco fix these problems? i guess my question is: is the stock 103 GOOD? or should i expect to have to change exhaust, air cleaner, and add a power commander reprogram to get it to run RIGHT?

My grandfather pasted away about 10 years ago at the age of 93. He was a master machinist that worked on making prototype products (e.g. he helped build the first machine to automatically wire re-bar together for poured concrete highways. One of the projects he told me about was when Sears actually made stuff. They took a 5 hp outboard motor and bored it out with larger piston to create a 7.5hp motor. It was a disaster, unless you redesign fuel mixture coming in and how the larger volume of gasses going out, you don't have significantly more power, you just have marketing.
For example, does your 12 megapixel camera really take pictures which are that much better than 6 megapixels (inexpensive to increase)? Yet manufacturers never talk about the minimum aperture which is expensive to improve (the ability to collect light by the lens which has a huge impact on the quality of pictures).
How many people are talking about the width of the torque bands between the 96 and the 103 (would be a real competitive benefit, but would also take expensive engineering to change exhaust ports, etc., rather than just bolt on changes). HD needs to take a careful look at the US auto industry if they want to understand the impact innovation and pricing have on the market place. People may say the this industry is different, but that's also what the Car industry said. My Dad ALWAYS bought Chevy's - that is until he bought his first Honda - game over. Cheers, Kevin.

Just my 2 cents, but how can you compare a modified engine to a stock one? Regardless of CI's? I've seen dyno sheets with guys that have evo motors putting out awesome numbers. I've also seen dyno sheets for TC 88 and 96's with great numbers as well. I would bet there are very few of us that own these machines that don't in some way, shape or form modify our rides. I have not rode it yet, but I bought 2011 Street Glide with the power pak option. Even before reading this thread, I knew I would eventually do some engine work to it. The way I look at it, I saved myself a few bucks going with the 103 instead of the 96.... I already have the jugs. Whichever what you go, I doubt very much you will leave it completely stock. I also own a 97 Heritage Springer, so I know for a fact that performance wise, the 103 is gonna be better. Just my 2 cents.
