The 103's come (standard) with oil coolers.
Yes you will want to replace the breather, and yes, you will change the pipes.

If you have the choice, 103 is the way to go. 2012's all come with 103's in the touring line now.

2011 103 Power pack also comes with SE compensator, oil cooler, compression releases, ABS and security.

255 cams, a gutted cat with good mufflers, a PC-V and intake make the darn thing RIP!

My bike is paid for.
I'm sure as hell not going to get rid of it this year for 7 more cubes.
It will take a lot more than that for me to go into debt.

There are them that are happy with what they have, and there are them that will never be happy...

This is something that those with the 103 are not talking about. They run real Hot, even with the cooler.
The 96" does not come with the Oil Cooler. Yes, because of EPA standards the motor runs lean and hot. If you (I did it) put what is equal to a Stage One Kit, you will get a cooler running motor and more power. You will get an even cooler motor when you add the Oil Cooler. One more plus for the 96" motor is on the '09. If you get a 49 State model, it does not come with a Catalytic Converter. No need to remove it and chance problems down the road if the Feds, or your State get more involved in Emissions checking of your vehicle. Plus you can always increase the displacement to the 103 at a later time.

The 103 was required so Harley could keep up with the EPA and still have power. The only thing you can do is the Stage One or better Kit. Exhaust and intake issues to get a cooler and better running motor (and the question of the Catalytic Converter in the Headers). But the Oil Cooler is already there. You don't have that option any more because the motor would over heat if the cooler was not already standard. The next step is the 110" motor.

So the question of which is better? It depends on how much you want to spend.

Alright. let me try my Harley math skills . . . let's see . . . I think 103 is a bigger number than 96 . . .

103
- 96
____
= 7 so. . .

That means, the 103 engine is 7 times bigger and funner than the 96 engine!

My Mama told me to quit waisting my time in school, and I finished the 3rd grade anyway! It pays off, especially in Haarley math!

Or how about trading your 08 heritage in for an 07 -10 road king classic,
then building a 103 out of it. Boreing your jugs 250.00, forged pistons
10.5:1 325.00, 259e cams 300.00, SE heads 1000.00, SE air breather
140-150.00. 2025 bucks + labor + Exhaust $$$
