Fuelpak, powercommander, or Dealer download? :-/
So I'm getting overwhelmed with the options for upgrading exhaust.
It seems like if you want to do a nice intake and exhaust its necessary to do a fuel remap... no biggie.
But I'm trying to find the best... "bank for my buck."
Im a pretty complacent kind of guy. If I do an intake, exhaust upgrade I don't feel the need to go back in 3 years and do it again. So buying a $300.00 Power commander seems silly. I don't need to tune that much just want my bike to run better.
Fuelpak? Easier to use but is it THAT much better than a stage 1 download from dealer?
exhaust? Slip ons? headers only? both? 2-1? I just want something that sounds good, runs great and isn't stupid expensive.
What are combinations you guys have plus total price/ hp gains?

I'm sure this subject have been beaten to death, resurrected, and beaten again and again.... But here's my experience on my 2008 FLHX:
1. S/E aircleaner, dealer's 103 download.
2. Stock pipes modified by drilling four 1/4" holes @ baffle ends. Runs a little lean, then:
3. NightRider's 14IED, plugs looks good and tan.
4. Change pipes to Jackpot Dyno tuned w/ quiet baffle, runs lean again, also extremely hot.
5. Change 14IED to XIED, a little better, but still lean.
6. Got FuelMoto Power Commander V, tried to install it, pushed in one pin on ECM
7. Got new ECM, told dealer do not do download, as PC-V will be in sometime soon.
My point is with or w/o the 103 download, I don't feel any differences. Was trying to avoid "piggyback" fuel tuners, hence the IED's. But in my case, XIED (@ ~13.8 AFR) is not enough to correct my lean and decel popping issues. V&H doesn't have a map for FuelMoto's pipes. Hence, I decided to go with PC-V, will be installing it this Wed. Will report result.
I don't doubt the PC-V's nor Jamie's map at all. But just in case the PC-V died in the middle of nowhere sometime from now, I'll still have the XIED in the loop for temporary fix, my theory is simple resistors probably won't died. And I do not have plans to do any major changes to the engine at all. Just looking for a deep sounding exhaust and runs cooler.
Sorry for the long post, I just want to post what I experienced so fellow riders can somewhat benefit from it, and not wasting time and money along the way.....

I've been where you are... Trust me on this one, forget about the "download". Spend the extra ~ $100 or so and get the Powercommander from Fuel Moto instead of the Fuel Pak. I've done both and you will get better support from Jamie and crew than having to dick with the numbers on the Fuel Pak where nobody really knows what they control. Even if you really do stick with it and don't make any changes in the future, IMO you will be more satisfied all around with the Powercommander.

If I am wrong pls correct me, but my understanding is that the factory program remains when you add the PCV, hence if it did take a dump you could disconnect the PC harness and reconnect the factory connector to the ECM and roll on. Might not be perfect but would get you home.

On my '07 Heritage I had the PV3, big sucker and python true duals. When I wanted the mechanic to do a 103' upgrade with pistons and cams he told me that he could not adjust the PC3 enough to compensate for the upgrades and had to add a HD racetuner. On my new '11 RG 103' I am adding the race tuner and a big sucker with rush mufflers. The stealer in Pensacola has a deal on the racetuner for $400 which includes 3 hours on the dyno. HD mechanic says the mufflers will pass enough exhaust so I'm trying to stay with them since they are a lot quieter than the pythons were. Don't know if I was fed a load but seemed to work very well---the heritage with Andrews TD50 cams had great torque.
