Default Oil cooler leaking!

I installed the HD Oil cooler on my 09 FLHX and I have a oil leak. I believe it's coming from between the oil adaptor and case. The gasket has a waxy film on both the flat surfaces, but I was not able to peel the surface off. The directions state some gaskets have an adhesive backing which should be peeled off, while some gaskets do not. Has anybody else run into this situation? If so, what was the fix?

Thanks a million!

My Son installed a HD Cooler for Me. It like Yours leaked and He took it off again and used a new gasket and a non-hardning sealer. That was about 3yrs ago. It has not leaked since.

I have installed the oil coolers on three of my Harley's. Had no problem peeling the cover off of the gasket.

Also be very sure that the adapter is rotated just right. It can seat in two locations and one of them is wrong and will leak even with the gasket installed correctly.

Get the new nut torqued down to specs also.

I installed mine and had a very slight leak. I removed it and found that there was a tiny speck of something on the gasket surface. I installed a new gasket and put some gasket sealer on 1 side to make sure the gasket didn't move while I was re-installing the adapter. No leaks now.

Thanks for all the advice. I removed, cleaned everything and re-installed using a high temp sealer on both sides of the gasket. I let it cure for 24 hours. No leaks.... so far

My brother-in-law just had the 1000 mile service done on his new RGU done a couple weeks ago by the dealer he bought it from. Yesterday he found the oil cooler leaking. Dealer said bring it in. They knew all about it. Said they have had a bad batch of gaskets from the supplier. They fixed it with an "upgrade" gasket, and a significantly higher torque spec. on the bolt. He told him Harley's replacing just about all the new bikes gaskets at about a 1000 miles. Particularly in the hotter areas of the US.

Had the same thing happen less than a year after installing the HD oil cooler. New gasket and sealer fixed the problem. Swear there was something not right with the original it came with.

The torque spec on the directions was 16 ft pds. and because it's a crush gasket I torqued it a lot more than 16ft pds.
Question: Where you able to get a new gasket from the dealer? The parts list on my instructions has no part number for the gasket so I assumed I could not buy it separately.

i think mine is leaking too. The bottom of the oil cooler is wet with oily dirt. Not dripping on the floor but deffinatly not right. Is this due to the gasket you guys are talking about. Mine came with my bike its a 09 FLHP.

Would I lose all my oil if I pull the cooler?
