Ditto on the '0000' steel wool, takes it right off and doesn't scratch the chrome. Wish you woulda checked with the forum before you scratched the chit outta your pipe....damn dude sorry to hear that.

Steel wool is the trick. A little heads up on the 0000 steel wool though. I have used it for years and it'll take anything off chrome, even rust with no damage. However, I used some on my V&H true duals heat shield (for a bug) on my last bike and it scratched the crap out of the chrome. Fresh from the package too. I don't know what the deal was. I have used it since with no problems. Had to have been soft chrome?

Just be sure and test in a hidden area first.

0000 Steel wool does the trick for me, and it is safe to be used on chrome.

Dampen a rag with carb cleaner, works on bugs and eaven burnt on plastic bag residue. Steel wool leaves fine scratches that dulls chrome, polishing is ok once in a while but keep in mind it is an abrasive and will go through the chrome if done too often. I had it happen with some made in china parts the first time I polished it I started seeing copper. Chrome seems to be getting thinner and cheaper these days, unless it is made in the usa I would be very carfull. Eaven then I dont think it is as thick and hard as it used to be. Good plating is expensive especially with the chemicals used and eviromental responsabilities. Cheaper chrome keeps prices down.
Any how carb cleaner has worked the best for me and doesnt damage the chrome.
Good luck!!!
