I have the premium 12 inch hand adjustables on my 2009 Road King and the are a major improvement over the stock air shocks. They have been on the bike for close to two year.
I picked them up of e-bay for $220.00. They came off a CVO Street Glide with 2800 miles on it and for the price I could not pass them up.
I'm 203 pounds and ride them at the minimun setting and when the tour pack and the wife gets on I turn them up about 4 clicks and all is good.
I was thinking about a set of Howards shocks but the wife injured her back and is basically out of work for the rest of her life. So all those little niceities and extras are out the door for quit some time.
I have had zero problems with bottoming out but I have had them top out a couple of times. Usually a very low speed going over some type of drop off like the end of a driveway with a pot hole on the edge (Drive way at work).
So, if your on a budget and you run across a set for a good price go for the the prem. If you Have the disposable income for Howards Shocks go for it.

You don't need anything fancy to do that, although a proper bike lift is a good investment. If you take care with a suitable car jack you can lift the bike a little while it is leaning over on the jiffy stand. I recently did my Sporty that way, as it was actually easier than using a lift IMHO.
