Default 09 swing arm on an 07 bike. ???

Both bikes are ultras. the 09 is a little wider from axle hole to axle hole, but looks very close at pivot point.

A lot of folks who never done it say you can't interchange them because the 07 has a 1" axle hole and the 09 has a 25mm axle hole.

So has anyone heard of or done it?

BTW, 25mm and 1" is the exact same measurement.

The frames on the 09's are completely different, and so are the swingarm mounts and swingarms themselves. The wider swingarm facilitates the 180 tire, the 180 won't fit your fender, the new fenders have different tour pack mountings, etc. I could go on and on but....That said given enough money and creativity anything is possible.

If the objective is to get a wider tire why not go with a wide tire kit? What are the other benefits to going to the 09 swingarm?

there is alot of research done in a frame even with a swing arm how it affects a bike and its handling i am sure u can put one on ur 07 but it might never handle right or feel squirly at high speeds , think about it this is ur life on only two wheels is it worth messing with? just for a bigger tire ?

I have a 2007 swingarm in my 1990 bike! I found a couple of articles on the internet about making that change, but neither of them covered all the things I had to do, to make it work. I got the swingarm, axles, wheel etc from a trike conversion on ebay.

25mm and 1" are NOT exactly the same! So they are not interchangeable. 1" is 25.4mm, in other words .016" different. Close, but not close enough! If you go ahead with this you will need the complete 09 swingarm and wheel assembly, so the difference in diameter doesn't matter.

There are a couple of threads on this subject, so it is worth taking a little time to find them. The possible problems, from my experience, include: the swingarm bushings which my not have the same internal diameter; tyre to belt clearance; tyre to fender clearance.

If you go ahead with this, please post details of your experience, so we can all share it!

Has been done before with (relatively) minor modifications. The 09~current has a detachable bolt on rear section frame. Cutting your own rear section off and welding a complete 09~current section on will get you 99% there than cutting a small piece off the one side of the new swing arm with a die grinder for clearance, that is all there is to it. I would change the rear wheel from IDS to old style if you do not have cruse control. A rotor side spacer and cutting a 66T Dyna new sprocket flange (inside) needs to be turned down to duplicate the new style width wheel. Axle spacers must also be made as outside bearing to bearing hub must be made to duplicate the IDS wheel. You can buy all from a Trike shop or from HD.

This modification can be handled by the home builder and a good machine shop (rear wheel fabrication) who has a basic understanding of working with metal. If you decide to move forward, you will find this easy looking back. Good luck!

My only question is why?

The 180 tire will fit in the 07 swingarm. Fender and struts are a different story. It's been done here, do a search.
Never mind, here it is:
