Default Front Fork Seals

For those of you that have replaced your forks seals, which way does the black seal go? The reason I asked is I just replaced them both and one was the opposite of the other....I went to the dealer with the old seal and asked them.. the service guy told me make sure the numbers on the seal are facing the top...thats odd, the one that wasnt leaking had the numbers facing down...i'm working on a 2001 roadking...anyone know for sure?

Another way to tell is put some oil on the fork and slide the seal up and down, the seal will wipe oil in one direction and in the other direction oil will pass under the lip. I did the same thing the first time I did a seal install.
