When they get pressed in using a plate it squares the sides for smooth, even placement that also allows proper depth of bearing easily.
When they are tapped in, there is a chance that they may be driven into the bore unevenly or not square....possible damage to the bearing seat/race and/or bore.
I've pressed bearings in and tapped them in....just have to make sure they are square along the sides(clean too) when doing it.
(whatever tool you use...don't want to tap against the bearing *****/rollers either)
