Went from Ultra to a Road King today......

Last year I traded in my Road Glide on my current '07 RK Custom and never looked back. The fugly just never felt right to me, having just come off of a Sportster. As to long distance touring, I wouldn't worry about it. Last year we did a 3500 mile two-up trip and never once wished we had the RG.
Having said that, I can't stop looking at the new RG Ultra...

They're Both Nice!
When it comes to the touring chassis there is no forwards or backwards. They all offer their own personalities as well as share a common heart. Enjoy the quiet while it lasts, cause I kinda figure it probably won't and most importantly, RIDE ON!!

Congrats and enjoy. I absolutely love mine.

I just bought my 2nd Ultra (11 Limited) and the more I think about it, the more I feel like the OP. I too take VERY few LONG rides (actually if I'm going far, I want a/c and a roof......lol) and am thinking my next bike will be something lighter/smaller.
My problem is, the wife loves to ride, and likes the support and comfy of the tour pack.
I like your thinking MR OP.

Most guys want the complete bike. Either they get a RK and eventually put a tour pak on it, or they get a UC and eventually get the detachable tourpak hardware and take it off. I am in the latter Category, event though I haven't yet, I know I will.. most likely this winter. I'm a gadget guy, IPODS, GPS's , smart phones, etc. I thought it made more sense to go the full blown touring route first. As much as I like the detachable RK windsheild, I love the batwing. I've ridden a SG, I know its an inch lower, but the tourpak removal makes the center of gravity lower and it feels light. There is no wrong decision.
