Default saddle bags popped open

My wife and I took a trip to Cuyahoga Falls last Sunday. Riding on I-76, middle lane, 70 mph, hit one hell of a bump. It scared the yell out of her and left me stuffing things back in the windshield pouch. About ten minutes later a car passed us in the outside lane and the passenger was screaming and pointing out the window at us. My wife thought he wanted into our lane but I figured he must have seen something on the bike. Sure enough, the saddle bag tops had popped open and were hanging off to the sides. We didn't lose anything but I am wondering if I hadn't better start locking them when we go down the road. I know I had them secured before we left and it has never happened before. Anybody else ever experience this problem?

Very common. Always lock them. My buds and I do.

Mine do this (pop open) when I forget to lock them. It also made the latch fall off the back of the lock once.

Sometime stuff gets under the lid when you latch it down causing extra tension on the latch. Hit a bump and it pops. It could also be a broken latch spring. They are cheap, rust and break often. Happened to me on both bags. Easy to replace.

I find it happens when loaded and the lid teather actually folds backwards and gets hung in the flatch assembly and gives that not so secrure fealling when you closed the latch. So now when I have bags loaded I slide my hand in the bag right before full close and make sure the lid teather is layin the right direction.

Yep, make sure inside tabs are put in the most down position. Went around the block and heard the clunking.
