I just used a bolt and lock nut through the mirror hole and painted it black to match.

Ok, clear. This is what I am thinking about:

So I need to tap thread in the holes while now there in no thread in it.

No this is the one I have

Just ran a bolt through it.
Top painted
Bottom with a chrome cap on lock nut
All that's left when you remove arm and cradle

I bought a mount from eGlideGoodies, as I don't like the RAM type. Too BMW GS for my liking! It is certainly worth mounting it off to one side, especially if you ride two up. I did that simply for convenience, then found my wife can see it over my shoulder. So a bonus is I get a running commentary over our comms, for example when we recently crossed one of the Alpine passes from Slovenia to Austria, warning me of each hairpin bend so I could be prepared and in the right gear!

This has got to be the cleanest & cheapest mount and it puts the GPS right in your line-of-site — drilling the fairing is not a big deal. I rarely have the GPS mounted and actually like the look of the RAM Ball. The only cost was for the RAM Ball, a longer 3" RAM Arm and a fused, marine grade cigarette plug.
