Avise on pre '06 RK

Advise on pre '06 RK
That would be "ADvise"
Thinking of coming over to the dark side and getting an earlier RK to cruise on. I know there are issues with tensioners, oil pumps and such, so what up grades do you advise to do or to look for when purchasing an '05? Or if you could point me to a thread that would help me out with this.
I did find a '07 RK "Custom" FLHRS that I have always liked, kind of a hot rod RK or a Dyna big brother if you ask me. Should I lead towards an '07 with the 96" and 6 spd? Price is a big factor! What do you guys think of the Custom and the Suede Blue color?
Thanks in advance

had 05 rkc now 07 ultra,no problems with the 05(some had valve seal issuies).now the 07 is a different story,i ride 2 up and found the gearing to be too tall, had lots of heat problems, although they shouldnt be as bad on a rk,also compensater issuies.the gearing is soo tall that i seldom use 6th gear only on the slab at 75 or better.

Some of the 'early' 05's had valve guide seal issues, i.e., they leaked and oil consumption was high. The cam chain tensioners are a well-known issue. I had gear drive cams installed in my 05 RK, and just upgraded to a hydraulic kit (Screamin' Eagle) on my 04 RK. The S/E kit comes with the upgraded oil pump. But if you do gears, do the pump, too. Do the rear shocks. I've had Progressive 440's and now the 940's. Both good, but the 940's are really for someone who does two-up riding at least some of the time, else, you better weigh 200+ pounds (or they're gonna be real stiff). Front forks, do the Progressive cartridge kit. Good idea to do a 'frame stiffener' like Progressive's Touring Link, Tru-Track, etc. (This'll make a marked improvement in handling). Get a good seat. Sundowner for long distance (for example), the Harley Brawler or Corbin Hollywood Solo if you want the low/lean look. The rest is the more standard stuff, stage 1, pipes/mufflers, etc. Oh yeah, install cruise, too, though I understand the kits are now obsolete so you'll have to scratch around a little for parts. BTW, both my RK's were/are Customs. Another nice touch is hard bags, and another is a removable fairing.

My '05 runs great. It has been good to me. I have an early '05 built in Sept of '04, no valve issues that I know of, but she does burn a lil oil every 1000 miles.
Pre '08 bikes are nice for no throttle by wire, but you do not have the triple "6" package. However, I love my 88", 5 speed, 5 gallon tank.
