Sucks to have days like that. Too bad we don't have a "reset" button we could hit to start the day over. I look at those little nicks and scratches as "character", like the bike has grown up with me.
I got the 3M brand clear plastic, cut to size and only one person so far has noticed it. This is the same stuff they use on high wear areas of cars and trucks.
I used to cringe every time I scratched or scuffed my bike but slowly but surely I'm learning to live with it. The bike is a rider and it's going to get some wear marks on it. I agree, when you make a bonehead mistake and cause damage to something that otherwise wouldn't get scratched, it sucks. But, there you go, $hit happens. When I changed my fuel filter recently I scratched the paint right next to where the dash installs on top of the tank. And you guessed it, the tank panel does not cover it. So you can see it and it drives me nuts. That tool from George's garage works perfectly for torquing the nut when reinstalling the fuel pump mechanism, but it's made of steel and if you don't have it aligned just perfectly, you WILL contact the tank top. Ask me how I know. Moral to the story is, relax, do the best you can to care for you ride, and take the scuffs and scrapes in stride. At least you got 'em honestly!
These silly lid bra's have prevented numerous "shoe dragger" scratches on my bike. Wait until a passenger scrapes across yours & you'll definitely be looking for a set.
Especially if you are, well uh, have a lower center of gravity. Mine take a beating but buff out pretty good. Somdeday there will be "silly little bras" or I kinda like the LINE-X idea too.

My grandmother used to have that stuff on her couch....
