Default NUVI 550 GPS - as good as it looks?

It would seem Garmin has a sale on GPS units. I've my eye on the ZUMO 550 but not prepared to pay the price tag Garmin wants. I discovered the NUVI 550 which is selling for less than $300 CAN. It's waterproof and can be used for water navigation, Geocacheing, in the car and on a motorcycle. POI's can be downloaded to it and up to 10 routes can be stored. You can also use compatible charts and topo maps as well. Is anyone familiar with this unit as it seems too good to be true. Any input would be appreciated.

I have owned a Nuvi 550 for about 2 years now. It is a great little unit. It doesn't play MP3's, but I already had a good MP3 player, so that wasn't a big deal to me. The unit works great, and is rated as motorcycle-friendly because it is waterproof and the touch screen works with gloves. I mount mine in a RAM mount on the handlebars. I highly recommend this model.

Spend the extra for the Zumo... More motorcycle specific and worth it.

I also have a Nuvi 550. I bought it as a back up to my Street Pilot because Garmin discontinued them. You can also get a 1 to 3 gig mini SD card and store all the maps you need. You can download maps to the gps or to the card via a reader.

I am still using a Zumo 450 that I have had for nearly 3 years. I use the MP3 for music on every ride. A recent map upgrade makes it as good as new. Will go with the Zumo 665 when this one bites the dust.

HD Zumo 550 here , worth the money over the Nuvi 550, tho I did get mine for abt half price ..

HD Zumo is no longer available in the 550 , only 660 and 665 IIRC

i believe the nuvi 550 is waterproof but... the screen washes out in the sun,if u can come up with some type of visor it would be easier to see.

I've got the Nuvi 550 and went from Ottawa to Kentucky and Nashville and back to Ottawa last summer with mine on the bike and no issues at all. It's been back and forth between the bikes and my work truck since then for a total of over 70,000 km and no issues at all. Try GPS city in Alberta for great deals on everything that you'd need to mount it on the bike as well as great prices on the unit as well. PM me if you need the website
