Default Volt Meter

My volt meter on my 2004 Ultra reads a little over 15 volts whenever it is running. No starting or running issues, but normal is 13 to 14 volts on most 12 volt systems when the battery is charging. This battery is about two months old now.

Is this normal for a Harley?

That's about where my 2011 RGC runs.....not exactly precision quality instrumentation on the dash

On the other hand..... my air temp gauge is right on the money

Don't have a gauage on my RK but had some charging issues last year and when I checked it with my digital multimeter it read right at 15 and that meter reads +/- .00001% or something like that. wouldn't worry

Don't know why, but this cracked me up. The air temp gauge is a total waste of space. I know when it is cold. (My ***** shrink up.) I know when it is hot. (I have sweat dripping off my glasses). Don't need no stinking gauge to tell me if it's hot or cold.

Now with the volt meter - I haven't got much use for that either. What ever happened to the amp meter? All the cars I had in the 60's had amp meters. They were more useful because they told you something about the charging system. All a volt meter does is tell you if the battery is dead. I know when the battery is dead. Bike won't start and I got no lights.

ok, no worries then...First time i paid any attention to it, so I guess as long as it is above 12 volts, I can go back to ignoring it.

thanks for the replies

I know why they don't use an amp gauge..... Its cause they would have to run a heavy gauge wire to it, and then back from it.

Volt meters do not carry hardly any current...... a little wire is all thats needed for a volt meter..

Amp gauges carry very little current. they use a shunt .
