Does your ride burn oil ?

These bikes are a god dam mystery to me regarding oil.
My 2008 Dyna used a notch of oil approx every 1000 miles up to 5000 miles then stopped, My 2009 Fat boy used about the same, but sometimes when I re-checked it would be slightly over the max fill. This also stopped using oil about 5000 miles, both 96 engines
My 2012 Road king 103 is all over the place. When it was spanking new it would be down a notch after 200 miles and would require a bit of oil, this carried on until after 1200 miles, then it didnt use any oil in the 1400 miles I did around Scotland. On the return home some 227 miles it used 2 notches on the dip stick. Since coming home I've done 300 miles and the level dropped one notch. I did'nt have time to top up on this occassion and after another 100 miles when I checked it it showed above the max line.
I check it hot on the side stand as the manual and at exactly the same level place in my garage each time.
I have noticed one thing in all my Harley ownership. If the engine is 'buzzing I does'nt seem to use any oil, if I run it and it sounds 'relaxed', after a while it will show some oil loss. I'm not labouring the engine but it just seem's to be the way.
My Evo Sportster which I owned in 1986 alway needed oil regardless of how far I went.

Same with my Road King. I used to go through a quart at least between oil changes with HD oil. Since switching to Amsoil a few hears ago I do not lose any oil.
