Need thoughts on extended warranties
#12
Hey, I purchased a two year extended warranty a couple of years ago when I bought my 2005 FLHTCI/E.G.C. with 24,000 miles, and I now have over 56,000 miles on the bike and this extended warranty more than paid for itself on my last trip to the dealer where the total on my workorder was well over what I paid for the warranty, and it was covered, so all I paid was the $50.00 deductible, so it's welll worth it, specially if you're buying a used bike.

Do not get an extended warranty. Think about it, extended warranties are money makers for the providers or they would not be offered. Do not get extended warranties on anything (TV's, appliances. cars, scooters, etc, etc.), then when an if you have a problem with any purchase, have it fixed and pay for it with all the money you have saved by not buying extended warranties.

A big mistake I made was not knowing that the extended warranty
1) Can be negociated in price
2) Can be bought anytime before the expiration of the factory two year warranty
3) Can be bought from any dealer....see #1 .
We bought the extended warranty because of the known cam chain tensioner problem in the TC 88's. Once I installed gear drives, and having had no problems at all in three years, we cancelled the warranty and received a pro rata amount back.

Don't hesitate, take the insurance. I bought my 2005 Ultra used, and it was in great condition, previously dealer serviced - expected no issues. I wrestled with the question but knowing I had nowhere to do the work myself, and that shop rates are high, I didn't want to take a chance. Took the 5 year ESP - since then the ESP has covered:
- new front brake reservoir
- new oil pump
- new camshaft and bearings
- transmission seal leak
- electrical problems and tracking (more than 15 hours labour over several visits) , including replacing the TSSM
- replacing the shift linkage
I think it more than paid for itself - and the nice thing is that when I traded the scoot in on my new FLHTK I got a prorated refund (minus $50 service fee) for the remaining time.
I know there are lots of opinions out there on the issue but my experience was enough that I took the maximum ESP I could get when I bought my new one - didn't think twice about it.

Extended warranty
I just got an extended for my 2009 FLHTC, for the next 5 years.
Like you I debated & searched this forum before I started looking around.
Like I also live in Vancouver Canada, so I went to my local dealer. $1945.00, & $350.00 fpr the wheel/tire package, & 12% sales tax! WOW!
I called a gut named Jim Palmer of Kutter Harley in Wisconsin, after having read a lot of referrals here. Same coverage, $1688. I gave him my credit card number right away.
I hope I never need it, but then I like to ride to California regularly, where I have kids living. Nice to know I'll be protected.

I've had it on some bikes, and not on others. Overall I am money ahead.
