My Dealer 45 miles away charges around $270 as he put it, for the 1000 mile service if I supply the oil. My Dealer said HD has never gave them a problem with the Warranty with Amsoil so I'm good to go on that.
My local indy only 15 miles away will do it for $150 and his mechanic is HD certified as well. I'm not having any serious problems with my new bike that would require warranty work so I think I will save the $120 for other things and let my indy do the service.
I was thinking of doing it myself but the steering head lubrication looks to be a bit much for me. [ I wonder if they really do that] So do you guys think I'm making a good call on this?

Which service? The 1000 mile? I would get the service manual and do it myself.

If your not going to do it yourself, I would definetly let the Indy do it, save time and $$$, it won't cancell your warranty. BTW I would still check the oil level afterwards to make sure it's right.

 

Go to the Amsoil web site, order your own oil and do it yourself. I paid $10.00 for a 6 month plan that got me 25% off so I bought 2 cases. Pick up some O rings, filters and only other things you will need are a filter wrench, drain plug wrench and a shallow oil pan. Too easy to do yourself....

Funny that you should bring up checking the oil level. Last year I had my Dealer do the 1000 mile service on my 10 Dyna and after I put about 18 miles on, I checked and it was way over full. I had to remove 6 oz just to get it down to the full mark.

 

I always buy my Amsoil by the case, have been since shortly after I got my 2000 1200-C.
I could easily do the 1000 mile service my self, except for greasing the steering head bearings, that looks like more then I could handle.

 

If I wasn't needing some front end noises and some exhaust issues (gurgling) checked out I'd probably have an Indy near me do it as well.

Yeah it is expensive but I'd like to think that SOME dealers service center may actually take the time to do all of the stuff that they are SUPPOSED to do...you know the whole campaign "it's more than an oil change"
