Default Road King - Or Street glide

as a Road King Owner I love the ability I have to take my fairing on and off (dragon Fly Fairing) and I love the ability to cruise around town naked (no fairing) I Also like the feel of the bike. I can also run a myriad of other windshield styles.

My question is this: When I get a new bike or think about purchasing another, why should I go with a full out fixed fairing bike like the street glide? What do I gain besides the gauges and maybe the price tag ?

what would I be missing out on by just sticking with the road king.

Please weigh in.

ride (rent) for a day and see if you are impressed with the differences; if not stick with the RK

Integration! Radio, lights, no looking down at guages. At least that is some of the benefits I had. I love the Ultra but should have kept the King (It was paid for).

Keep the Road King if it works for you. I personally prefer the look of the Road King. It's a classic look that never ages.

if, as you say, you "love the ability to take the fairing on and off" it seems foolish to move to a bike where you don't have that option.

Of course there are other benefits to the SG, but that one trumps them all IMO.

Sounds to me like you've already made your decision.

Gauges are big plus, especially the tach. I ride by the tach all the time. Of course you can put a tach on a Road King too, so I guess that's no big deal. What drew me to the Street Glide is the stripped down, low profile look. It got paint where paint is supposed to be and it's got chrome where chrome is supposed to be (in my opinion).

I've had 2 Road Kings and really liked both of them, so when you boil it all down, you have to ask yourself, "how does thing make me "feel" when I throw the right leg over it"? There's an emotional "thrill" (for lack of a better term - I can't explain it) when I get on the Street Glide that I didn't have with the Road Kings. Now that I've said all that, if I were looking for new bike, I'd look hard at the Road King Classic with the 103 engine. I'm as fickle as many others.

I'm sure that didn't help much, but my $0.02

I went down exactly this path and had concluded that it was less expensive to start with a RK and make it want I wanted than do the same with a SG. Especially when you factor in that there are more gadgets on the SG to upgrade and since that is a character flaw of mine, I would simply avoid the temptation.

Of course, while I was in analysis-paralysis over which model, I found a used RK that had a lot of the my desired mods already done, so that made the decision very easy!
