You're not going to get a CEL from removing your cat. Now if you F' something else up in the process maybe you could... but not for the cat. Like if you damage an O2 sensor. Think about it. There is no O2 sensor after the cat on a Harley. The Delphi ECM in our bikes is not using OBD2 diagnostics. It does not check for a difference in exhaust gas composition pre and post cat like an ECM in most cars made after 1996 would. The Harley ECM could care less if the cat is there.

here's a post by fuelmoto concerning the catalyst headpipes:
There is little difference in terms of performance between the 2009 non catalyst pipe and the 2010 catalyst pipe on a completely stock bike. With a stage 1 air cleaner and mufflers you will see similar gains, but more so with the non catalyst pipe. The heat issue is a whole different story. As far as improvements we were easily able to improve Hp and Tq over the stock headpipe with our Jackpot 2/1/2 headpipe. Here is a direct comparison between the stock headpipe and our 2/1/2 which was tested on the same bike, same day. There is a thread on headpipe testing here https://www.hdforums.com/forum/touri...ig-torque.html

I did mod mod on my SG last night following JC's method.
All went pretty easy, a couple hours total and I was backi riding again.
I have stock pipes with V&H Monster Ovals, I liked the sound but wanted just a little more bark, that's exactly what this mod did. It's still radio friendly but just a bit louder when cruising but a noticeably louder bark when I crack it. Not a completely different sound, just a bit louder. Plus now I have the benefit of not having that scorching heater on my bike.
Nice write-up JC!

Really liking what I'm hearing in this thread!
I just put rinehart slip-ons on my '11 FLHX and was very disappointed with the change in sound. I knew I would be based on all I had read with the cat being the biggest killer of the sound, not to mention frying my leg.
So what I'm getting so far is that it is OK to gut the cat, run slip-ons, and use the stock ECM without any kind of tuner or dyno time??
If this is true, does anyone know for sure that it won't screw up the 2 year warranty?
Thanks everyone for posting and I look forward to more great info
