I have shout out to JC Turbo and say thank you. And my wife's leg thanks you.. Just had my guys in our shop do as you did and clean the kitty out thru the the trap door and weld it back together on her 2011 FXDWG. Man it runs fantastic and heat is not an issue anymore on her right calve/thigh area.. So a BIG THANK YOU!
Oh ! And also amazed at the sound gains we she got,,definitely sounds like a Harley should,,!

Did this mod a couple of days back just as the OP described. The pipes were coming off anyway so I could fit the auto tune unit and WBs and I had the tools, so did the cat at the same time.
Took a good few hours but am happy with the results (louder with a slightly deeper tone). I can't comment on the reduction in heat as I feel it from the inner thigh area and can't say I ever felt it from around the right boot. I also changed my tune at the same time running a richer (performance) tune from the PV so the increase in power and reduction in temp will be more to do with the tune then the cat.
Couple of points - if you don't have an air chisel, you'll have a real hard time separating the 'window'. Quick Steel is a great product if you are a dodgy welder (like me). It's like muffler putty but stronger. Just kneed it and cover the welds and any potential leaks are taken care of. And if using the high temp paint for pot belly stoves and exhausts, all I can say is 'it stinks' as the heat cures the paint!
