Virginia Beach Riders - Route Advice needed
Please excuse the misspelling of Virginia in the post title... tried to correct it - too late, lol
Good-morning: Iam a retired Firefighter here in Ca. The wife and I made our first Coast to Coast back in 09 (Turlock, Ca to Savannah and back) Great ride. Then last year we joined www.rftw.org - after we reached DC, we turned Left and hit all the states north - then another left back to Ca.
This year we plan to ride with RFTW again but turn Right after DC. We plan to cross the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel - into Virginia Beach area..
After that is my question to you.. One of our goals is to reach Charleston area but how we get there is open to suggestion.
We have been looking at highway 12 through the outer banks from your area down to Morehead City? So, what is your thoughts on this route - somewhere around the 1st of June? Looks to be two or so ferry rides (from what I can see $10 + or so??? or just hitting another route south???
If you were riding from Virginia Beach to Charleston - what route would you take... we have 'some time' but not a lot of time to see the area - I know we could spend weeks in your area and not see it all - so, what are your thoughts..
I great appreciate your time and input.

If time is not an issue, from Virginia Beach via the Chesapeake Bay Bridge tunnel to Shore Drive to the Virginia Beach Oceanfront. Their are some real nice back roads that will connect you to south Virginia Beach to Route 168 which will take you to down to the Outer Banks (OBX) NC. Their are a couple of ferry's there. Make sure to check times for the ferry's. I believe that will take you to 17 south (ocean highway) That will take you to Little Washington, New Bern, Wrightsville Beach, all the way down to Folley Beach, and then to Charleston, SC.
Nice back roads, but watch out for the famous "Carolina pull outs" on the little towns on Route 17. Be very careful of your speed on Route 168 once you cross the VA Line into NC. They (local law & State Troopers) will pull you at times for doing 5 over the limit. Once you get to the Outer Banks, watch out for sand all over the road on route 12.
They do not allow Radar Detectors in Virginia, but are allowed in NC and SC.
A couple Biker friendly places along the way that I may suggest are Boneshakers, Clutch Bar & Grill, Monk's Grill (killer burgers and cold beer) in Virginia Beach, South land (at the VA/NC line) has pretty good BBQ and beer. Down in Nags Heads, Check out Lucky 12 Tavern on the Beach Road (Virginia Dare Trail) around mile post 12. Good Friend of mine at all those places mentioned. In Kitty Hawk, There a cool little Drive inn call "John's Drive-inn" also on the beach road. They sell over 250 lbs of Mahi Mai daily. Good Food and milk shakes but no Beer and closed on Wednesdays.
I am sure that someone will chime in and tell you more. I hope this helps and have a good and safe trip!
