It's almost impossible to get a twinkie motor to get the classic harley sound. The last of the real "potato-potato" sounding bikes were the carbureted evos.
No, the old shovels and pans didn't have the super-deep, bass sound of some of the newer exhaust systems like the CFRs or V&H monsters. But those exhaust systems do sound good, and if they'd been available in 1968, we'd have been running them.

My bike is an 01 Road King (non EFI) so I am not as restricted as you wealthier folks. I have 4" Bassanni's and without the baffles I love the sound of my bike. Don't need a horn as I can barely hear it over the scoot. BTW, I am also very respectful and do not charge my throttle where it is inappropriate. Flame on!!!
I'm not a huge fan of the deep-sounding mufflers on the newer bikes- they lack the crispness that I associate with the "Harley sound". The pinnacle to me is a shovel with a set of drag pipes.
