The bike has 2 years warranty with unlimited mileage. I thought the tires are expected to run until they reach the wear marks or some 32nd number close to that. Mileage doesn't apply. Maintenance of tire pressure is all I know that can effect normal tirewear, or canyon carving/ donuts/ burnouts. I have trouble holding the big sucker up much less doing the stupid stuff for me. Regardless of the outcome I will still visit the Harley store and try to get even by drinking up their coffee.

 

Got around to going to Dealership today. Service guy didn't even look at it. He said that was about all I could expect to get 11000. It now has 11015 and I started noticing the noise starting about 9000 miles. I decided to measure and see what was left. The lowest number I got was in the center and it was 5/32nd. The cupping measured about 4/32nd difference between the low and high measurement. I also found a couple of cracks next to the small v cuts about 1 1/4" long. They were directly across from each other. Is this normal? I can live with the noise for a while, but am concerned with the cracking. If you only have 9/32nd " when new and the lowest I have now is 5/32nd " that isn't even half worn out. Some of you say you got 15000 out of them. At 11000 I am only 2/3 worn out. I am going to call customer service and see if they can help. I am not hunting something for nothing, just want what I feel is right.

 

After talking to HD customer service they gave me a reference number to take back to the dealership and work out a resolution with the dealership. The service guy took measurements and had a technition ride it and determined it did need replacing. Appointment was set up this morning at 9:00 and they replaced it and test rode the bike by 10:00. Great service and no hard feelings as I talked to the service guy and he said he had not had experience with this problem on rear tire before. I read some other threads and it is common to get 17000 miles out of these tires. Some guys got 20000 which is even better.

 

This cracks me up, first the tire is worn out.

Second you are going to try to go screw the dealer and moco out of a tire, but if you have to buy, you got got a great indy that will sell you a tire. Want some cheese to go with that wine.

It's guys like you that always try to screw the system that make it difficult on all of us. We all are out to screw the dealer and some dealers are a pleasure to do business with.

 

I had a new tire cupping(stock dunlop) after 4000 miles. some places 2/32 diff. on the same tread lug. very bad on left side of tire, not so bad on right. tire was so cupped at 5000 mi. you could feel it when you roll it on garage floor.I checked tire pressure before every ride or daily while traveling. never low on air. Dealer told me that it was cupping because" there are more left turns in MD than right turns". I got Dunlop involved and stealer told them that i was running low air pressure. Now tell me who is trying to screw who? Now I have new metzlers front and back, they stick like glue, ride great and I hope they wear well. 2009 ultra that rides smoother than new.

 

I just changed my rear 407 with 28,000kms(17,000mi). On the tire gauge it was still in the green, still good for a couple thousand miles. I had it changed anyways, I don't like taking chances with tires. Almost all my riding is solo. I also keep my air pressure at 40 psi and check it a lot. My front was changed out at 7,000kms due to cupping and now has 21,000kms on it and looks good. I don't think you're scamming the dealer as was posted earlier, you were just under 50% of the tire life when your problem started. Also these multi- compound Dunlops are not cheap to replace.

 

My rear tire has some cupping if you look at it, but I do not notice any riding affects. Have over 14,000 miles on it and about 4/32" tread depth left. Can't complain about that. Unless you live in the mountains. tire is always going to wear out in the center, even with the correct tire pressure.

 

How is ke5rbd screwing the dealer when the dealer agreed?

 

Congrat's on getting your tire replaced ke5rbd. Don't see how you screwed anybody though!! Looking forward to riding with you in the smokies!!!

 

The center of the tread sees more use and therefore wears more. It flattens out, and as a result you hear and feel the transition between the flat spot and the full tread on the sides when you're turning. This is normal and happens to all tires.

Be happy you got 11,500 out of it. Either deal with it until you're down to 2/32 or buy a new tire.
