changing oil on the road

RE: changing oil on the road
As someone else already said, I'd change it prior to leaving on a long trip. Never been gone that long that it couldn't wait till I got back. I'd never drain on the ground. Besides the environmental impact, it will just add to the dislike of bikers if and when it gets discovered.

Simple solution. Legal and EPA approved disposal method.
Get a bag of Kitty Litter. Cut one side out of the bag, drain the oil into the bag, change the filter and place it in a plastic bag, put the liter in the nearest dumpster.
Put the filter back in the box and dispose of it at an approved site.

Most HD shops will let you change in their lot and furnish a drain pan and oil disposal. Walmart, AutoZone, et al. will dump the oil for you for free.
If I can't find a place that can furnish a dump pan I just go to the grocery department and get a roasting pan for about $.59. Wipe it out and throw it away when done.
If you do a motel parking lot, on the road, or other place where you can't immediately dump, just put the used oil in the containers you just emptied and take it to Auto Zone, Walmart, or most any other auto center and have it disposed of. It is my understanding that if they sell oil, they have to furnish disposal of old oil.
Regards,
Bill

When I lived in Hawaii for 5 years, the local autozone's, NAPA, etc didn't do oil recycling. You bought a kit that included absorbent pads in a plastic bag in a box. Do your oil change and throw in the trash can for disposal, as for the filter, take it to a dealership/parts store to crush. The shops usually had a drum to dump their oil into, so save a couple of bucks and dump your old oil into their drum.
