From time to time I've been known to lose track of what gear I'm in and go to down shift like normal and realize I was in 4th not 5th.

Whether I’m shifting up or down I'm sort of “in-tune” with the feel of the bike and also checking the rpm’s. Typically when I’m going for the lowest/highest gear I’m more concerned which gear I'm in (going for the stop or the cruise). Even then this isn’t a big deal; at the stop I’m always pushing all the way down and at the cruise I have a green light to let me know I’m in 6th, and normally I know I'm there anyway.

I did really well with a 5-speed, but this 6-speed keeps me screwed up all the time. Gettin used to the engine sound and using the tach. I'll have it down in a couple years.

i know when i am in first, unless downshifting, and since i won't go down multiple gears without being sure, it doesn't really matter. then its engine and and sound. i will also know how many mph i am dropping and down shift the appropriate number. like if i am going 40 and drop down to 20, thats 2 gears. do i always get it right, no, but the majority of the time i do.

i know when i am in sixth, cause i got the green lite.

while riding usually 3rd and 4th, or 4th and 5th give me the most trouble unless i check the speedometer/tach. then its pretty easy.

biggest problem i have is coming to a stop and downshifting till it stops, but it stops in second.

now where i really have an issue is when i am riding the sportster with only 5 speeds compared to the ultras 6. i keep trying to upshift cause around 65 - 70 it gets a bit buzzier than the ultra, so i am constantly looking for whats not there.

I know exactly what gear I am in based on rpms and my speed...then again, I've been doing this for nearly 40 years Having said that, it doesn't really matter what gear I am in because as long as the rpms are good, not lugging or screaming, it's all good.

I often look for a 6th gear even though I only have 5.

So I either pay attention to what gear I am in, or release the clutch slowly in case I downshifted too fast.
Probably near everyone had done this....I know I have.

just like shifting up...listen to the engine to down shift, you don't care what gear your in as long as you are going down.
I drive a 5 speed and if you listen to the engine you can shift with out using clutch. Can only do it 2 through 5 haven't figured out how to do it in 1st.
You can always but a Dakota product that tells you what gear your in at all times

I always know what gear I'm in. Old school I guess. The neutral lite is nifty though.
