Default Power Commander / Starter bang

Can someone help me understand why when I start my bike, if I don't hit the starter switch in less than 3 seconds after I turn the power on I get the dreaded "starter bang"

I have heard that this is a Power Commander issue. And it has gotten worse since I installed the PC.

Is there anything in the mapping that can make this better?

I had this problem on my Deuce when the battery was going bad. Are you still on the original battery?

Had the same issue but didn't have PC and had 255 cams. It's the stock compensator bottoming out; upgrade the compensator to the SE version.

I think that is due to the stock compensator, not the PC.

Default Compensator

If the compensator is the culprit why doesn't it do it if I crank it immediatly after I turn the power on?

As far as the PCV goes, it did it ocasionally before I installed it. But after I installed it it will bang everytime I wait more than 5 seconds to crank after the power is turned on.

Had the same problem with my PCIII on my '07. When you turn on the switch, the PC powers up until the fuel pressure relay makes up. At that point, the PC loses power until the bike is started. As long as you hit the starter before the pressure relay makes up, you're usually good to go.

My 09 was doing it B-4 the PC-V.
If you think it is the PC-V, just disconnect it and see if it happens then.
Simple enough..?

This was my experience too. If I let the fuel pump run it's full 2 or 3 seconds before hitting the start button then I got horrific kick back and clatter. When I hit the starter immediately after turning on the "run" switch I usually got a normal start free of kick back.....but not always. I eventually had electric compression releases installed and have never had the problem since. The shop that did the work discovered a broken "compensator spring" and unfortunately replaced it with the OEM compensator. This was last summer and long before I heard about compensators being a common problem and the SE heavy duty solution. I'm hoping with the compression releases the compensator may never again become an issue for me but if it does I'll know what to do thanks to this forum.
