Heres my dilema, since I had ridden a Roadglide, back a few years ago, I have wanted one. I thought the radio was great, the ride was great, and I could see myself putting down some miles on a glide. The problem is I bought a Roadking, first streetbike, and at that time I didnt really know exactly what I wanted so the decision was more like a shot in the dark. My roadking is a standard, carb model, w/o cruise. I put a xm radio on the bike and it performs prob. better than a roadglides radio. I would like to have EFI, cruise, and I would enjoy the controls for the radio being handlebar mounted. What keeps me from making a trade is I have so much time and money in my Roadking. Buying a new bike would be starting over in alot of ways, and the Roadking has some options that are unique to the bike. I can remove the windshield, for either hot weather or boulevard riding, and with the speakers in my fairing lowers I can still have a radio without the shield. I can also take off the fairing lowers and still have a radio with my windshield box. Cruise would be nice, but Im not sure just how much I would use it. EFI would be great, but a good tuned carb will perform just as well. Another thing is that I really enjoy my ape hangers, aside from the looks they are really comfortable, and in my opinion apes dont look good on a fairing bike. Another thing is that I finally broke the 10grand mark with the payoff. Maybe before long I can actually have this thing paid for and the payment money I spend on it could be used for trips, or other mods. So after all that drawn out verbage, my question would be, Is it wanting what you have or having what you want? Is there enough difference to justify a new bike, with new payments, and have to start over buying the goodies for it? Any ideas or suggestions?

 

From reading your post it sounds like you really enjoy your current bike. New bikes are always great, but new for the sake of new shouldn't be the drive. Didn't see to many reasons stated why you want to go to the glide besides crusie control and radio controls, but there were many reasons to stay with the King. Either way you couldn't go wrong bike wise but your curret ride is one sweet looking King....

 

I have been exactly where you are. Wanted a Road Glide, got talked out of it by friends who said they were hard to sell, and bought a Road King (FLHRCI). I like the Road King, but think I would have liked the Road Glide better. But you take a bath on every trade, and mine is paid for, so I'll probably keep it as long as I can get parts (my other ride is a 1995 Suburban I bought new, and now has 150,000 miles).

 

Cruise contro is available from HD. I love mine and use it on trips.

There is an outfit that makes fairings to replace the RK windshield. Uses the same QD brackets. About a grand.

I've been thinking about which HD to get when I get my accident settlement from when my BMW touring bike was 'killed' (whenever THAT happens...) I've been torn between an FXDX and a Road Glide. The reasoning I used to decide was: If I get the Dyna, will I be wishing I got the Road Glide? If I get the Road Glide, will I be wishing I got the Dyna? So, think to yourself - if you trade in the RK, how much will you miss it? I'll bet quite a bit.

Looks like you're in a position to go either way, you have some equity built up in the current bike, I would'nt trade, but sell outright, if you did decide to buy a glide. I think you could just do some looking around and if you found a nice glide at a decent price, you might end up pretty close to what you owe now, and if you buy a used one you might find one with a lot of goodies already on it.

I use the cruise on my bike quite a bit and really like it, you could install one on your current bike. One thing you could do as well is rent a glide and take you a trip on it and see if the bike still does for you what it used to.

I know sometimes if I get an itch I have to scratch it.

The only reason I sold the Roadking and got a Classic was for the radio. The roadking also had 80,000 miles on it. Since you already have the radio, and can add cruise control for 400.00, how much are you going to gain by getting a Roadglide??

If you really like the RK, and the way you have it set up, just ride it and save the money to travel.

The Road Glide is the best looking Harley hands down. EVERYONE has a fuggin Road King and I mean everyone. I truly have enjoyed the ride of the Glide and the fairing is awesome on the road for sure. Dump the sweet looking King and come on over to the front of the pack bro! You wont regret the Glide I guarantee it!

I would have to agree with the fact that your bike is sweet. Add the cruise, I love it. EFI can wait ‘til the bike is wore out. If I was looking at a fairing bike, I would buy an Ultra classic.
