Assuming that the black smoke is a rich condition. Where'd the oil go?

Not sure, but I have never seen oil burn black, always blue.

Most likely candidates would be valve guides or rings. Black smoke is an indication that the bike is running excessively rich. Two quarts of oil in 1000 miles would be a lot of oil running through that engine. Something is not right, hope your rebuilder stands behind his work. Not too far though.

Wouldn't there be a big black oily film in the end of the pipes?

I did big bore and cams on my bike last year and burned a lot of oil.
After talking to many people, I decided to tear it down for inspection. You may want to pull the plugs and get a light in the cylinderto look for burned oil on top of the piston.

I had installed one of the compression rings in the front cylinder upside down.
Not wanting to take a chance I pulled the rear jug. the rings were right on that one.
I took the jugs to a trusted machine shop to have them inspected.
New set of rings and all new gaskets and I was good to go.
It sucked doing it twice but, the second time was much faster.

So "if" it's an upside down ring, it won't require it being bored to the next oversize?
Did you have to rehone the cylinders?

That was what I thought. The machine shop said there was no need to do anything other than install new rings. I took the jugs and new rings to have them checked.

Well my guy is a machinist. If I'm lucky, it'll just be a quick deal and I'll have it back in a couple of weeks. Going to ride it this week/weekend, then bring it down to him Monday.
