Default How do I know if my bike is a 50 state?

Are they only sold in California? Is there something on the bike somewhere that says it is a 50 state and can be registered in Cali? If so, where and what does it say? I have no idea what the hell I will do if Cali tells me I can't register it when I move back next year.

Just get 7,500 miles on it first and you shouldn't have a problem.

Look for an emissions sticker, it should read "applicable to US and California standards". If you live in CA and buy a 49 state vehicle, it has to have 7500 miles on it at time of purchase. If you are moving into the state Dmv will probably have you jump through some hoops but eventually you'll be okay.

If it is your own bike just register it when you get here. If you buy one from out of state then there are rules.

hmmm.... not what the DMV in San Deigo told me in 2009 - unless CA rules changed since then - I was told my Texas bought '08 FatBoy had to have 7500 miles on it to be registered as a CA bike..... or be converted to a CA legal bike by a dealer.

just saying.

to the OP - best to contact CA DMV to get the correct answer.

I thought the VIN identifies a California emission approve bike.

If the 6th number in the vin has a 3,5, or 6 it looks like it is a California model. If you have the owners manual handy it says in there. I'm reading this from the '09 Touring model manual, and I don't know if this changes from year to year.

Yup, the 6th position... 3, 5, or 6 AND MINE IS A... 1! I guesss I have to wait until I get 7500 miles on it, but it is about a year away, so I should be pretty close to that if not already passed it.

Thanks guys!
