Not trying to make fun... because I almost had the same thing happen to me while removing wax from the fairing. My garage floor leans a twards the center of my garage and if I have the bike pulled it the wrong direction it stands more straight up than the other way. luckily one of my buddies was standing there watching me and drinking his beer and was able to put out a hand and stop it all without spilling a drop.
So yes I can see how it is possible and I am sorry to hear there was no saving yours. And like others have said 3 windshield screws and 4 on inside of fairing. But leave the center windshield screw for last so as you don't drop the fairing on your front fender! then just squeeze the headlight connector to remove it from the lamp.

Outter Fairing has to come off to replace the mirror.
