Default 06 ultra shifter shaft change

the splines are worn on the shifter shaft (the one that comes out of the tranny) and the shaft needs replacement. I have a manual but it pretty much says I have to remove the entire tranny gears. Seems like a lot for such a simple part. Does anyone have an easier way to make the change. I honestly get a bit worried when getting into the gearing. I have done prettry much everything on my bike other than that engine and tranny. I would hate to screw it up.
thanks

Going to be watching this thread since I noticed mine is also loose. I was thinking about welding it until I need to do something else to the tranny. Then just cut it off when I do the repair.

Hey. I did the change of the shifter shaft. Quite surprised how easy it was. Special tools need are the tranny sprocket removal tool and the primary race removal tool. Georges Garage in Ontario CA. has the best price for the tools. Maybe cost you a couple of hunder $ but a lot less than the $1000 HD will charge you to do the change. I have put about 1000 miles and all is well and shifting is neat and clean. No problem getting to neutral like I had before. Sweet, give it a try. If to get stuck just bring the bike to HD and pay the grand.

The race can be cut off with a dremel if you're careful.

Things sure must have changed since 01. Mine stripped out last year on my way home from Florida just as I got off the exit to stop at a HD shop. They put in a new spline and shift lever and charged me just over a HD's
