Going to pick my bike tomorrow....finally!
#12
I bought an 09 RKC from a guy in Virginia Beach over a month ago and I'm finally headed out there tomorrow to get it. I am nervous and excited at the same time.
Nervous because I haven't ridden in over 6 months and my last bike was a 750 Honda. I am going to start slow to refresh my skills before I hit the road to come back home. I know to go easy on the brakes as they are probably way more touchy than on the Honda. Make extra effort to be conscious of not applying front brake when the wheel is turned (good thing is I never got into that habit on my old bike...). Easy on the throttle and clutch, too.
Anything else?
Oh, excited because I'll be riding again!!!!! Hells yeah!!!!!!

Well, I'm back in Fredericksburg, VA with my RKC safely parked in the garage. It took a while to get reacquainted with a bike, but I felt really good about halfway through the trip. For the poster who warned me about the weight....I thank you. I didn't drop her, but I was very conscious of the weight and using the back brake at slow speeds. All of this is stuff I learned in the MSF course, but it's good to be reminded from the experienced ones. Thank you.
Here is my review of my new to me 2009 RKC:
Harley shake: kick ***
Comfort: kick ***
6 speed: kick ***
Cruise: kick ***
ABS: luckily didn't have to use....
I could go on, but you get the picture. That thing is so smooth and it's effortless at highway speeds. Once I get "bored" of stock, I'll get to work on it. For now, I'm just going to ride it.
It had 200 miles on it when I got it today. Doubled up on that. Can't wait for more.

You should test the ABS when you get a chance and have a safe place to try it. The front works as expected - you get feedback like you do in a car. The back is weird. the pedal seems to drop to the floor like it fails and your instinct is to release and reapply. don't. Just keep pressing it.
Of course, ideally you should never have to use it, but it is good to know it is there.
Enjoy the ride!

You'll be fine. My only bike was a 750 honda too. Sold it about 5 years ago. I had my first ride in years a few months ago. A Ultra limited. I was close to shaking when i first got on it but as soon as I started moving I felt real comfortable. Theres really nothing to actually "riding" it.

Congrats...One of the other posters made mention of making sure you have shoes with a good grippy sole. I bought a pair of HD boots. It was amazing how much confidence I gained when I put my feet down and had to support the weight of the bike, especially with my wife on the back. Ride safe and enjoy.
