Cam chest rebuild = lousy gas mileage???
#21
I'll be doing about 1000 miles this weekend also. I guess I'll have to keep good records and report them back to the dealer and see what they say. I've got about a 4000 mile trip planned for mid May. 120...150 miles per tank is not going to cut it. Not a lot of fuel stations where I'll be in the southwest.

Most interesting. I have an 03 with the SE 1550 big-bore kit. Over the winter of 2009/10 I upgraded the cam train to the latest version (new oil pump etc) and put in 203 cams. As part of the up-grade the engine magagemenet system was flashed to meet the cam upgrade. Before the upgrade I was consistently getting 48/50 mpg (Can) using premium. After the upgrade it immediately dropped to high 30' to low 40's, still with premium. Over the riding season last year mileage varied from a low of about 38 mpg to a high of about 48mpg for what appeared to be, at times, identical riding conditions. In fact one of the best was actually obtained riding two up. I discussed this with the dealer and a local mechanic. Variable and poor gas was the response. I am also member of a Kawasaki Concours forum and the subject of variable gas and ethanol on fuel consumption is an ongoing discussion. A solution that I will be following up is the addition of small amounts (2ml per L) of TC-W3 2 stroke oil. For those old time Brits on this forum it is like a trip down memory lane when we added a couple of shots of "Redex" at each gas fill up.
