Default Need oil capacities for a 97 Road King

Hi everybody,

I almost have a new bike. It's a carburated 97 Road King and I'll have it next week. It's a very nice bike but it seems that has been stopped for a long time and the first think I want to do is a good oils change.

I'm going to get a Service Manual from ebay, but it can takes 3 or 4 weeks until it arrives to me, as I live in Spain so I would like to know it someone of you can tell me the capacities of the three holes oils as the manual says.

Thanks a lot and I promise to put some photos as soon as I have it.

Engine oil 4 qts./ Primary 38 ozs./ Transmission 26 ozs. The transmission and primary take the same fluid. Buy 2 qts., put 1 qt. in primary plus 6 oz. of the second qt. Put what's left of the second bottle in the transmission.

Thank you very much Mike. That was just what I need to know and it's very good the primary and transmission advice that you give me.

Just because I'm curious, I'm going to use the Formula+ for this, as that's what I use with my other bike, but can I ask you which one do you use for trans and primary?

Just use the one you prefer. There are many differing opinions on this subject.

If the bike has been sitting I would clean out the carb as well.

You may want to run the motor oil 500 ml low.

This helps prevent blowby from the heads into the air filter ( and onto your leg)- it also halps to prevent to dipstick/filler cap from being pushed out by high pressure in the oil system.

add 3 liters oil, then measure on leaning jiffy stand ( side stand) when hot.

most have the hot level 1/2 way between the hot and cold marks.

enjoy the new ride.
