Ohlins on the Ultra Limited
#31
I will only echo your Superbike friends comments on Ohlins as I first encountered them while racing in 1979 and was amazed at the difference they made. I have had what was considered the best shocks possible and set up by a shock guru before that, Ohlins still better. Tried other aftermarket shocks such as WP, Works, Fox, Koni and many others. Their 20 year partnership(Starting in 1985) with Yamaha allowed them to glean much more information than they would have on their own.

I had those initially on my 09 SG and still found a not to pleasant ride over pot holes, RR tracks, etc. Switched them for the 13 1/4" shocks and yes it raised the bike some but the ride was night and day. If the pre-sag is set correctly, you will not notice much of a height difference while sitting on the bike.

I'm also light (155/160 lbs), so when talking about shocks it also makes a big difference I think.
Anyway, the SG stock shocks are so bad that I'm sure anything else is better: I'm pretty confident I did the good choice with those Ohlins!

Thanks. With the adjustments I have made so far, I am totally satisfied with the ride and feel of the bike. Especially going over RR crossings, through dips, in curves with questionable surfacing, and manholes/potholes. Still some fine tuning to do, but getting there. The most significant adjustment for me was the spring pre-load setting. If that is not measured and adjusted to the recommended setting, you can sure feel it on the road.
I know that Motorcycle Metal is currently working on a complete front-end solution for touring HDs, so I am anxious to see what they design. The front end on my Ultra is just "ok", and it could use some flex stiffening and definitely a suspension upgrade.
