Default rear tire life and possible up grade to wider

01 Road King, seem to only get 8K on rear tire using Dunlop 402.Any experiences with other manufactures? Has anyone been able to put a wider tire on like on newer bikes. I ride with a 05 Ultra and his tire is just a bit wider than mine. Any help or suggestions would be apprecaited.

You might look in the direction of putting a car tire on it. A lot better milage.

The wider Dunlop is the MU85- but it can be tricky with the belt.

I usually get 12-15K from the 402's on my Evo- really depends on the weight carried and road surfaces.
the only part of the wear you can control is pressure, even weight distribution and braking. I'm sure you know heavy rear brake use will work that rubber down, and the pads too.

I use Avon Venoms and get 8K out of the rear. Difference being the Avon has better grip and tread pattern compared to the Dunlop. All my Riding Buddies have switched to the Avons. In heavy rain, the twisties, of NC, they have felt great. Never a twitch. I could not say the same for the Dunlops. The back tire seemed to break loose way too often for my liking. As for the Car tire option.....I live in South Florida where the roads are flat and straight....and I will never put a car tire on. Those that do...Good Luck. Don't give a crap about mileage. When I go into a turn I want to feel confident that I have the grip.
PS I have a 150 on the rear of my '07 SG with no rubbing.

It's gonna be a fraction of an inch away from your belt. It's more trouble than it's worth IMO.

I just bought an mu85B16 for my 07 RK. They say it will fit so guess I'll try it. Michelin Commander for 59 bucks at Jake Wilson.

See if your town has a tire specialist shop ( in PHX, we have moto-tire and the wheel shop)- which are often very competitive on prices.

Take your bike in with the question, they should be able to determine if the mu85 will clear the belt, some do, some don't.

My evo FLHTC didn't, my evo FXR does

Car tire-awesome.
But that would be an interesting accident report.

Tire pressure has to be maintained to get long life out of the rear tire. The other big factor which seldom is brought up is rear rim truing. This especially factors into it with a rear spoked rim. If the spokes loosen which easily happens, the rim becomes a little off causing the tire to wear excessively. I am speaking from past experience.
