Wouldn't call it engine 'ticking', but curious...

Odd update of sorts
While trying to key in on the noise recently, I decided to do a 200 mile ride with the group.
In the process of listening for one sound, I noticed something new. Barely heard, but by end of trip, noticed a little bit more. An exhaust leak. Granted, that kind of 'tick' is distinctly different than a valve train tick, but I did find it interesting. Hmm, now why would I have an exhaust leak show up a year or so later after the install?!
Then, I got to thinking about the one thing I hate about these V&H Power Duals, the fact that they touch down so damn early on right hand turns. Well, if I keep 'touching' the asphalt with the header, stands to reason something will loosen up at some point.
So, though not the tick I was chasing, a new tick to address. BTW, for those guys that mentioned the use of Mobil1 and their noises? Past two oil changes on all bikes have been Mobil1. Her bike isn't noisy, but it still might be the issue. Have a few cases to go through before I try another brand, but your experiences just might be the cause. Glad you all chimed in. Thanks!

Air intake
Sometimes with the more open breathers or "air intakes" will make some ticking noises..most apparent from the seated position or standing facing the right side of the machine.. Take your hand and cover the top of the breather and see if the noise is coming from there..it does on mine. I noticed this when I cut down the stock breather cover, and installed the SE backing plate. The new noises like to drove me nuts for a while.

Seems like my RK makes that "ticking" noise at the same RPM's you mentioned....between 2000-3500-ish.
The RK windshield seems to focus the front engine noise right back at me. When I take it off, I don't hear it...mostly because the wind noise has replaced the ticking noise.
Most posters just say..."oh...it's a Harley...they make noise"...what a load of BS. That's the same as saying the same as saying the should "leak oil" to.
Just sayin....and venting...and stuff....

I run an open air cleaner on mine and comming back from a 500km trip last week 2 up, I had the same noise. Always under slight load in about the same rev range, so I put my hand over the side of the aircleaner and it made it heaps quieter. I've since made a plate to go over the side of the filter between the filter and the RSD cover as I think it maybe induction noise being allowed to escape from this type of aircleaner as I didnt really notice this thumping/ticking sound untilI switched A/C. Havent tried it yet but will post back later when I get a chance, but for those of you that are getting this noise are you running an OEM style football type cleaner or an open type?
