my '08 FatBoy started running like crap when the fob battery went dead. it started ok, but 2 miles down the road, all heck broke loose - sputtering, coughing, jerking, managed to do a u-turn and limp back to the house. swapped fobs and it ran great. I changed fob batteries once a year and always had a spare. my current ride, 03 RKC has a different type of fob - more like you have with you car. I don't need it to start the bike.

I replace one of the security fob batteries one year, and the other on the next year so that I know they will not both be dead at the same time, I live and learn the hard way.

If you loose the fob on a trip, on the 08's you can use the turn signal buttons to enter your secret decoder ring number and get it started that way.

As stated before it is best know the procedure to over-ride the security system in the event you forget to bring your FOB or you misplace or the battery goes dead it along the way. You should of already changed the dealers PIN to one you can remember. If you look in your owners manual you find a nice little card you can remove and carry in your wallet.

To use the manual method you will have to do the following;

NOTE: if 12345 was PIN (a)=1 (b)=2 (c)=3 (d)=4 and (e)=5

1. Turn IGN key to IGNITION and immediately hold both turn switches in until 5 dashes appear in odometer window.

2. Enter first digit of code (a) by pressing left turn signal switch (a) times.

3. Press right turn switch 1 time.

4. Enter second digit of code (b) by pressing left turn switch (b) times

5. Press right turn switch 1 time.

6. Enter third digit of code (c) by pressing left turn signal switch (c) times.

7. Press right turn switch 1 time.

8. Enter fourth digit of code (d) by pressing left turn signal switch (d) times.

8. Press right turn switch 1 time.

9. Enter fifth digit of code (e) by pressing left turn signal switch (e) times.

10. Press right turn switch 1 time.

Security system will deactivate and you can now start bike. Everytime you stop it you will have to deactivate it in order to start it again.
