I don't have much compaint about my 07 tranny.........
That said, I do worry about HD experiencing what the US Automakers are experiencing right now with car sales and learn from it. You better make a great quality product that lasts or at some point someone else will and your sales will go south!!!!!!

 

I know to some the clatter is a big deal, but once they have a replacement part its a simple fix to change it out. And its not something that will hurt anything or be dangerous till they do, ride the **** out of it. Oh and a lot 06's had a bunch of issues including 4th gear whine

 

The 4th gear whine on my previous 06 Ultra was much worse than any of the 5th gear noise on any of the 07's I've ridden (7 or 8). You are right. The fix will be in how they manage the load on the compensator springs...and it will be an easy one once they get if figured out.

 

I have an 07 RK Custom no windshield and I have the chatter sound in 5th and 6th gears. Its most noticable when driving over bridges or along cement dividers. Near as I can tell its from lugging the motor and echoes through the comp/primary chain. Happens anytime I'm cruising about 65 in 6th gear. Since 5th gear in my 07 is higher than than 5th in my 92 softtail. I only use 6th when going 70mph or better. I put about 500 miles on Sunday cruising 65 in 5th gear and gas mileage was actually better. 6th gear is great for the freeway but WAY TOO STEEP for back road cruising.

My suggestion bump you shift points 5mph and quit lugging the motor and let it rev into its power band were its most efficiant and the problem won't bother you.....at least until Harley comes out with a fix. Compared to my 92ST this 07 is SMOOTH

Maybe they will issue new owners manuals stating what you describe.EPA might be interested too.

 

I think you hit the nail on the head with the EPA comment. I'm convinced that some reprogramming of the ECU would solve the problem but it won't pass EPA standards...figure once I install the 103 kit and some after market cams I'll tune out the chatter by pulling back the timing and adding fuel in the lower RPMs. Worse case wait for a primary belt drive to come out.

 

Dont think the 103 maps are out yet,kit is.

This was my original thought, but if you keep the engine under a load, you will not hear the noise.. it's crusing speeds in 4 and 5..
I've also thought the compensator has been the problem, I want to take a look, but there's the warrantee issue...

If it just amounts to a washer to take up slack, sounds like an easy fix... But there may be a balance issue...

Another point, The weather has cooled off here in Houston, I went to Cleaveland over the weekend and the bike ran flawless..

So, if in fact, if the compensator is not machined correctly, and the NUT is bottoming out, and causing a false torque.. a washer under the nut
would be the simple fix... BUT if the washer would interfere with balance.. the the compensator has to be replaced.

Correct me if i'm wrong...

My 2007 FLHRC seems to be perfect...or maybe I just know how to ride it.
