Harley Marketing Trick
Yep yet another Harley marketing trick. As you read the forum they are every where. Harley makes poor or ugly parts and we Harley fans rip them off and replace them with pretty and assumed better replacement parts. Almost every Harley part has an up grade for said part. I know, I have most of them on mine. It's just like being addicted. No one forced me and I'm not bitching, just saying what a concept Harley dreamed up.
Oh forgot. I replaced my fork sliders for same reason. They had drawn mosture and look like sh**. Not that bad if your good with wrenches. Oh yeh, got them from Harley.

As others have said you could strip the remaining clear coat off, sand with various grades of sandpaper ending up @1200-1500 then polish with mothers mag& alum. polish. This got me buy for 2010 till this winter when i totally redid my front end. Its messy and time consuming, not chrome, but IMHO is a big improvement over the dull clearcoated lowers. This pic shows the stripper (paint&decal remover) doing its thing. Also the ocean air raises havoc with any bare metals :-(

a footenote here. 3m makes a headlite cleaner kit that has a foam applicator that fits in your drill. (23 bucks at pepboys) i used this with the Brasso and the forks look as new. spent a total of 30 minutes on this project. doing this on a "maintenance" type basis would definitley be a 5 min thing.
