Default 99 Ultra-tour pack off-now what?

Finally struggled through the snow drifts to the shop and got around to pulling off the tour pack on my 99 UC. I like the look a lot better and pretty sure i can make most of the wiring mess go away by routing it along the rack/frame.
Question is, do most people pull of the chrome rack for the TP or leave it? and, what options do i have for installing a small back rest for the Mrs, who used to love the Tour pack "-)
Most of the HD catalogs seem only to show docking, mounting kits for newer models, anyone done this to a 99 and can share?
Cheers
Steve

Look on E-bay for your docking kit and backrest

Here you go for a start... you will have to take off the rack

Here's a backrest for the wife

Cheers for the links but these (and the HD catalog) all show fitting all 97-08 Touring except FLHTCUI, which of course is what I have. Local dealer is of not much assistance--any thoughts?

I could be wrong, but the reason is the tourpak rack. With that removed the QR kit should bolt on in it's place.

Try a different dealer

HD doesn't explain why they exclude the Ultra, but it seems obvious that the reasons are: (1) the electrical connections for the speaker pods; and, (2) the CB antenna.

Owners have been making their '08 and older Ultra tour paks detachable even though HD doesn't offer a kit that is for the Ultra by adapting the kit for the non-Ultra Electra Glides. The electrical connectors for the pods can be easily disconnected and the wiring stored under the seat. This is what HD directs in the instructions for the detachable kit HD offers for '09 and newer Ultras. (See the kits for 53246-09A and 70032-09)

The kit for the '09 and newer Ultras include antenna patch cords to allow the antennas to be disconnected outside the tour pak. The AM/FM and CB antennas are then reconnected to brackets/masts that are frame mounted IIRC. Otherwise, you'll need to lift the tour pak liner to disconnect the antennas.

If you want to retain CB function without the tour pak, J&M offers an in-fairing antenna. I use it and it work okay; not as good as a whip, but good enough for group rides.

Take a look at the installation instructions for the '09 Ultra and you'll figure out how to make the tour pak on your Ultra detachable, and you can choose whether you want the AM/FM and CB functions and figure out a solution. It's not surprising that the HD parts people at your dealership are not well-versed on these adaptive uses of their products.

Good luck with your project.

Carl

Use the docking kits for the '97-'08, parts for the newer kits with adapters should be available separately. Congratulations on getting rid of the garbage box.

I know this thread is a bit old - but I just purchased the 2012 FLHTK in Blue/Pewter and I want to do the same detachable tour pack setup but have heard (and not from people that actually have done it) that the wiring is a bit clumsy and the detachable kit is not as sturdy as the rigid mount with content and as a backrest. Can you confirm whether or not sturdiness is an issue, and what is involved in actually detaching / reattaching the pack? I'm having the local HD dealership do the same, so I imagine they used 53246-09A and 69200181. Do the wires, when reconnected, rub on the rear fender? How many harnesses do you have to disconnect? What about the CB/Radio Antenna's? Is it as simple as unscrewing and relocating? Sorry for all the questions, just would like to know what I'm getting into

Its a 10 min job to get it off and be riding. All the wires will tuck around battery and under the seat. The tour pack may have a little wiggle but nothing major. Not an issue.
