what kind of jacket do you ride in

i don't look at riding my bike as a social event, so i use whatever jacket fits the weather. i do prefer my leather jacket, and my reasoning on wearing leather is that if you were to crash, the leather won't melt into your skin like a nylon ski jacket would. i guess i'm not yuppie enough to consider my wardrobe as a part of motorcycling.

I have a First Gear Kilmanjaro Jacket that I've had now for about 7 or 8 years and a set of First Gear Pants to go with the jacket. I use the Jacket for daily commute and for X-Country I also pack the pants. Infinately adjustable, warm when needed and amazingly 100% waterproof. Also have a fairly new Fox Creek Classic Leather Jacket and HD Chaps for the weekends. Gave my old leather jacket of unknown origin to my nephew (I swear . . . it shrunk). Very impressed with the quality of the Fox Creek Jacket.
Both Jackets have Armor, and at my age I ain't got any pride to worry about just broken bones.
Vents? They work, and work well on both jackets. Wouldn't buy a jacket without vents.
The leather is maxed out at about 80-90F and the First Gear at about 90-100F. Either is good down to about 40F with a light fleece liner.

I have several Jackets and the vents do help. I am always amazed at the temperature variance on cool days in Sunny vs. Shaded roads. My favorite is a HD Leather Jacket that you can zip off the sleeves, front, and back to create a mesh jacket with leather protection on back of arms and shoulders.

LEATHER under 60, textile over 60
I wore a textile jacket my first year, with a sweatshirt under it when cold. I met a guy who quit riding and he sold me his custom leather jacket and chaps. I love them but the jacket is very heavy, even with the liner out. So most of the season I wear the textile jacket which works great, but has very little style to it. I love the style and quality of the leathers, and the fact that you have matching chaps, so I wear it on long rides but don't like wearing the leather if too hot. I might buy a light leather jacket to go with the chaps, when warm. The company that made my custom leathers is having a clearance sale, because the owner passed away, she had been making custom leathers for 36 years, and they were of the utmost quality. Her husband is closing the business, it is called BIE CUSTOM LEATHER in Kiel WI. Phone #920-894-7323. I found out she passed today when I called to ask how much chaps for my wife would be,and they said $140. I expected him to say 2-300 dollars judging by the quality of my elkskin chaps. Soft as a baby's butt. Beverly did great work. RIP
