yes you're right. the 07 and earlier seat mounting system was different than the 08 and newer. in 09 the new style frames came out, and the seats from 08 and newer will interchange. the 07 and earlier seat mounting system will allow you to swap. your seat won't fit your buddie's bike.
It's because they changed the front tab,
07 and older: front tabs are on the seat.
08 and newer: the tab is on the frame (the seat has the slot in front).
